The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

Public Law 95-344 (1978) creating the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, states, "The Congress finds the natural, scenic, recreational, historic, and other values of a forty-eight-mile segment of the Chattahoochee River and certain adjoining lands in the State of Georgia from Buford Dam downstream to Peachtree Creek are of special national significance, and that such values should be preserved and protected from developments and uses which would substantially impair or destroy them. The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is a nonprofit environmental advocacy organization committed to the restoration and protection of the Chattahoochee River, its tributaries, and watershed. Founded in 1994, Riverkeeper has 4,500 members throughout the Chattahoochee River watershed, and uses advocacy, education, research, communication, cooperation, monitoring and legal actions to achieve its mission.
