Supervisory Coaching

Getting a coach is a great way for you to continue your personal and professional development as you transition to your new role as “Supervisor”. Below you will find a list of potential coaches, as well as links to external websites that offer more information about the benefits of having a coach and how to find one that is a good fit for you.

Supervisory Mentoring

New supervisors have a lot to learn and can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the demands placed on their time, having to learn all the dos and don'ts of human resource management and learning how to get the job done through others. As a participant in the USGS Supervisory Challenge class, you will be given an opportunity to have a Supervisory Mentor to assist you in starting your management career on the right foot. The Supervisory Mentor has been selected not only because of their supervisory experience but because they have a reputation within the organization for doing the right thing when managing people. These supervisory mentoring partnerships are in the form of "circles" and are valuable tools for growth and development.

The Supervisory Mentoring circle model involves one Mentor working with a group of supervisory proteges. The Mentor focuses the group and provides technical and organizational advice. The benefit of supervisory mentoring circles is that they generate many different perspectives rather than a single point of view. Additionally, the new supervisors in the circle may be experiencing similar challenges at the same time and will have the opportunity to learn from each other as well as from their seasoned Mentor. The relaxed and informal nature of the circles allows new supervisors to feel comfortable sharing experiences and getting advice on any challenges they face.
