Leadership Intensives (LI) are designed to deliver effective leadership experiences to a large population of the USGS in a condensed period of time. Leadership Intensives are open to all grade levels. Each region and headquarters office is asked to provide a list of candidates for these courses. Open enrollment classes are also offered in various locations. The LIs are an investment in the development of our future leaders of the USGS. Information concerning the courses and the nomination process is provided below.
The primary objective of the Leadership Intensive course is to support the USGS goal of developing a leadership-centered culture throughout the Bureau by delivering effective leadership experiences to a large population within the USGS.
Purpose and Content
The two-day Leadership Intensive curriculum was specially designed and includes various components from the USGS Leadership 101 and 201 courses. The sessions are designed to be interactive and the facilitators and coaches are graduates of Leadership 201.

Tuition for a LI is $500.00 per participant with a maximum of 26 students and a minimum of 18 students per class. Salary and any travel related costs will be borne by the participant’s office.
Two Options to Register:
Nomination from your Regional Director or Associate Director
Interested employees should talk to their supervisor to request training. Supervisors will forward their training requests to their respective ELT member for approval and subsequent nomination into the Regional and Headquarters sponsored classes. See LI schedule table below.
Open Enrollment Classes
Alternatively, with supervisory approval, employees may enroll in one of the three open enrollment classes scheduled for Reston, Virginia; Denver, Colorado; and Menlo Park, California. Open enrollment classes may offer opportunities for employees to attend a class at a more convenient location or timeframe. Registration for open enrollment classes is through DOI Learn on a first-come basis, http://www.doi.gov/doilearn/index.cfm.
Regional Directors and Headquarters managers may place employees in one of the three open enrollment classes offered in 2016. The OED reserves the option to cancel open enrollment classes if demand is less than 18 participants. Alternatively, if the need for more LI classes is warranted, as evidenced by the nomination, the OED will schedule additional classes as appropriate. Open enrollment classes bear the $500 tuition fee per student and require supervisory approval.
