Subject: Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Safety and Health Customer Survey Results

The purpose of this memorandum is to inform you of the Safety and Health Customer Survey Results.  Over the years, the USGS has formally adopted the Department of the Interior (DOI) Strategic Plan for Safety and Occupational Health Plan.  The USGS agrees to support and tailor our respective safety and health programs to meet goals established in the plan.  To facilitate this process, the USGS Occupational Safety and Health Management Branch (OSHMB) annually develops the bureau’s safety and health program plans, which prioritize safety and health program initiatives that correlate to DOI and USGS strategic plan goals while tracking action items to ensure their implementation.

In an effort to involve all employees in guiding the direction of safety and health programs, the OSHMB developed a customer survey consisting of thirty-three questions directly tied to DOI strategic plan goals and expected outcomes.  Questionnaire answers allow our customers to identify how well we are doing with respect to implementing DOI’s goals and related USGS safety and health programs.  Results of all questions and actions being taken in 2012–2013 are viewable at the following Web site:

Although the bureau historically sustains extremely high satisfaction ratings, we can always improve.  To assist us in that effort, we would encourage you to review contractor safety and health requirements, areas where we sustained survey responses less than 70 percent favorable responses.  In accordance with the USGS Survey Manual 445-2-H Chapter 33, the USGS has an obligation to ensure that contractors and subcontractors perform their duties in a manner that will not endanger the safety and health of USGS employees, volunteers, the public, or themselves as they work in or visit USGS facilities.  For implementation guidance please make contact with your respective local, area, or Office of Management Services safety staff.

Questions related to this correspondence may be directed to David Choiniere, Occupational Safety and Health Manager, at, 703-648-7553.  Questions related to the customer survey should be addressed to Stephen Gillespie at, 703-648-5705.
