Diversity—Where People and Science Meet the Challenges for a Changing World

Implicit Association Test (Assessment)

Most people are quick to self-report that they do not have biases. However, the vast majority of people do have implicit biases. Implicit biases are unconscious, hidden preferences. The most effective tool available for testing one’s own unconscious bias is the Implicit Association Test (IAT), created and maintained by Project Implicit, a consortium made up of researchers from Harvard University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Washington. The IAT was created more than 10 years ago and has now been used by millions of people in over 20 countries.

The IAT is offered to interested individuals as a tool to gain greater awareness about their own unconscious preferences and beliefs. The IAT can be completed free of charge as self-administered demonstrations.

A study published in June 2009, in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, shows that the IAT has validity in predicting behavior and, in particular, that it has significantly greater validity than self-reports in the socially sensitive topics of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and age. When people are unaware of attitudes or stereotypes, they can unintentionally affect behavior.

The Nine Diversity Cornerstones

  1. Diversity is about inclusion and engagement, leaving no one behind.
  2. Synergy can be achieved only when everyone is working together.
  3. Every team member deserves dignity and respect.
  4. Everyone adds value and must have an equal opportunity to contribute and achieve.
  5. High-performance teams eliminate the effects of prejudice.
  6. Understanding diversity must occur at all levels of the organization.
  7. Diversity solutions must be situation-specific.
  8. Diversity is everyone’s responsibility.
  9. You don’t have to be one of to stand with.
