Streamgaging Cableway Principles for Inspectors

Course title: Streamgaging Cableway Principles for Inspectors
Description: A broad-based understanding of cableway structures is an important prerequisite to conducting a cableway inspection. This course provides training for individuals charged with inspecting cableways so that they (1) become familiar with cableway technology and related terminology; (2) are made aware of factors to consider in conducting cableway safety inspections; and (3) can document and report to others on the safety status of a cableway installation by accurately completing a standardized cableway inspection form in the field. Topics presented over the 3-day course include; background information on USGS cableway safety and inspection, typical cableway components and materials, loads and forces on cableway structures, design criteria, and considerations for performing field inspections and reporting of findings. Reference will be made to USGS texts and other resources throughout the course. Topics covered will form the basis for classroom discussion that deals with completion of the standard USGS cableway inspection form. The session will conclude with a field trip.
