Sediment Records Computation and Interpretation

Course code: USGS-OED-SW2096
Course title: Sediment Records Computation and Interpretation
Description: Course Description - This course is intended to provide hands-on training in the computation of discharge records for suspended-sediment and, to a lesser extent, other water-quality constituents. The analysis of suspended-sediment data collected at frequent to infrequent intervals will be discussed. Information will be presented on the computation and application of cross-section coefficients, use of transport curves, and use of turbidity and hydroacoustics as analogs of sediment concentration. Participants will be taught the principles underlying load calculations and will compute loads using computer programs such as GCLAS, LOADEST, and SAID (using turbidity). Participants will work with instructor-provided data sets; however, they also may bring questions and/or data sets from their home offices.

At the end of the course, attendees should have a reasonable understanding of the issues, procedures, and mechanics of working and publishing daily sediment (and other constituent) records. Attendees should also gain familiarity with GCLAS, LOADEST, and SAID (as well as selected other scripts and programs) and understand the conditions under which each of the programs can be used.

Co-instructors include Nancy Hornewer (AZ WSC), Ken Skach (OR WSC), and Mark Landers (FISP).
