Geomorphic Analysis of Fluvial Systems

Course code: USGS-OED-QW1169
Course title: Geomorphic Analysis of Fluvial Systems
Description: The emphasis of this 5-day course is on understanding the basic concepts and fundamentals of fluvial geomorphology. Topics range from watershed processes and fluvial landforms to flow and sediment movement in channels. Also, included are discussions on stream equilibrium, channel stability, riparian vegetation process and functions, channel evolution, and geomorphic assessment and monitoring. The five instructors come from broad geographic backgrounds and diverse disciplines within the field of fluvial geomorphology. The course is presented in a framework that allows students from a variety of scientific disciplines to integrate material appropriate to individual interests of local physiographic environments. Course work is structured into lectures to introduce topics with some problem solving. Students are encouraged to bring their own studies and field problems for discussion. An afternoon field trip to a local stream will include an introduction to field methods for geomorphic assessment and>Objectives:
To seek a basic understanding of geomorphic principles of fluvial systems.
Target Audience:
This course is intended for all USGS personnel, Other Federal Agencies (OFAs), and cooperators involved in biological, water quality, sediment, or hydrological investigations of streams who seek a basic understanding of geomorphic principles and concepts of fluvial systems. Attendees should bring calculators or laptops for problem solving.
