What kind of information is on GeoMAC?

The following information can be found on the GeoMAC application:

  • Perimeter data gathered from the incident
-- this information is gathered daily if the incident personnel has created and made available the perimeter
  • Fire point data
-- this data is created from information downloaded from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC)
  • MODIS Thermal Satellite data
-- This layer displays information on fire locations using thermal images collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite
  • HMS Thermal Satellite
-- The HMS is an interactive processing system that allows the trained satellite analysts in the Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB), within the Satellite Services Division (SSD), to manually integrate data from various automated fire detection algorithms with GOES and polar (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Fire Algorithm (MODIS) and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS)) images. The result is a quality controlled display of the locations of fires and significant smoke plumes detected by meteorological satellites.
  • Past fire data including
-- Previous fire points from the current year
-- Previous perimeters from the current yea
-- Previous MODIS from the current year
    -- 2002 – 2012 fire points
    -- Historic fire perimeters from 2000 – 2012
