How is chronic wasting disease diagnosed?

Traditional testing for chronic wasting disease requires the microscopic examination of a specific portion of the brain or lymph nodes. Biopsy testing techniques for tonsil and rectal tissue samples from live deer have been developed; however, these tests do not work for all affected species, are challenging to apply to wild animals, and generally are not as effective as traditional tests.
