West Nile Virus FAQs - 15 Found

I am a wildlife biologist/birdbander/rehabilitator and handle live birds on a regular basis. Should I be concerned about exposure to West Nile Virus?

Bird-to-human transmission of West Nile Virus is extremely rare and is only possible through contact with blood or other tissues of infected animals.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has detailed recommendations for ways that laboratory, field, and clinical workers can protect themselves from infection. Additional information about handling birds is available from the USGS. NIOSH also has recommendations for ways that outdoor workers can protect themselves from mosquito bites.
