Where can I get information about drinking water contaminants and standards?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has a table of regulated drinking water contaminants. The list provides figures for the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water and potential health effects from long term exposure. The EPA page for Drinking Water Contaminants - Standards and Regulations has additional information. These drinking water standards were developed by EPA after considering information on the occurrence and distribution of the contaminant, the health effects of the contaminant at various concentrations, and the economic costs for treatment to remove the contaminant. More information can also be obtained from the EPA on their general Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water website.
