What kinds of effects can wind power have?
All sources of energy have environmental effects to varying degrees. Wind energy can affect both wildlife and their habitats. Wildlife impacts include potential bird and bat mortality from collisions or near-collisions with turbine blades and in some cases, the avoidance of areas near turbines. Habitat effects include the actual installations of the turbines on the landscape, which not only create surface disturbance but also bring service roads, transmission lines, substations, control stations, meteorological towers, and other structures associated with wind energy siting, generation, and transmission. Whether or not these impacts affect populations of species is not well understood and the aim of the assessment methodology project is to develop a process to evaluate the presence or absence, and magnitude, of these effects.
