Dear Listening Session Participant:
I wanted to take a moment to thank each of you again for taking the time from your busy schedules and critical tasks to come and speak with the USGS leadership team during the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Customer Listening Session held November 4, 2004. The listening session is always a wonderful opportunity for us to continue our on-going dialogue with our many customers, partners and stakeholders.
The purpose of this year's listening session was to build on the information we've gained from you over the past four years about our core capabilities and to begin a dialogue about the unique roles and responsibilities of the USGS to reduce the risks of natural hazards. Attached is a summary of our conversations. The report is also available online at http://www.usgs.gov/customer/conversation/. You are welcome and encouraged to share this report with others in your organization.
I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the actions I have taken since the listening session regarding our natural hazards effort. I have established design and outreach teams to shape the science objectives, partnership opportunities, and to develop strategies for communicating the natural hazards effort. These teams will be seeking input from technical experts and our many partner and stakeholders throughout this process. We are eager to advance this new opportunity and look forward to working in partnership with you to make this effort a success. Our collective efforts will help ensure the USGS is providing science that decision makers and communities can use to better prepare for and reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards.
