Mass Balance Data

Chris McNeil at the Gulkana Glacier

Benchmark Glaciers

Direct field measurements are combined with weather data and imagery analyses to calculate the seasonal and annual mass balance of each glacier.  This data release includes seasonal and annual glacier-wide mass balance, and the input point measurements and elevation data used for these calculations. Files are described in detail within the release.

Additional Glaciers

Non-USGS entities have maintained mass balance measurement programs at different times, with varied lengths and observational records. USGS uses this data for regional scientific work, where appropriate, and as such provides the associated data to the public here. This data is derived from multiple sources, and may be of varying format and provenance. The details of each specific dataset should be studied carefully, and are well documented within each release.
